What are the advantages of cross breeding?

The purpose of breeding cattle is to combine desirable traits that are spread in different breeds. In the breeding programme two animals belonging to two different stocks are chosen and are bred together hoping that the progeny would contain the desirable traits. The first important task in cross breeding is the selection of the parents.

The male and female are carefully chosen after they have proved to posses the desirable characters. The next important step is to find out whether the character in question can be inherited properly. Other important aspects in selecting traits for breeding purposes are the economic value of the trait, the range of variation of expression of each trait, the correlation among the traits and the cost of such a selection programme.
