Environmental education is to provide awareness about economic, social, potential and ecological interdependence in urban and rural areas. It should provide opportunities to acquire the knowledge, value, altitudes, commitment and skills needed to protect and improve the environment.

Environmental education should be interdisciplinary in its approach. It should included major environmental issues from a local, regional and national point of view so that it could provide insight into environmental conditions in other geographical areas. The education should emphasize on the active participation in preventing and solving environmental problems. It should also emphasize the complexity of environmental problems and there by the need to develop critical thinking and problems solving skills.

Environmental education should motivate learners in having a role in planning their learning experiences and thereby giving them an opportunity for making decisions. Environmental education should also use diverse learning environment and a broad array of educational approaches including the stress on practical activities.

Time has come when the subject matter of environmental education should be made compulsory right from primary to higher education.
