In early November 1993, Cleveland Browns coach Bill Belichick cut quarterback Bernie Kosar, who was the most beloved athlete in Cleveland in many, many years. Belichick thus became the most hated man in Cleveland. The Browns went nowhere the rest of the season, and Kosar went to Dallas, where he played backup to Troy Aikman and earned himself a Super Bowl ring.

Terry Blount of the Houston Chronicle referred to a cut of an entirely different kind in the lead of an article headlined: “Angry fans cutting Belichik no slack.” The Chronicle ran this article on November 22, 1993.

CLEVELAND-the most painful banner of all was unfurled with a few seconds left in the game:

“Hey Bill: Lorena Bobbitt wants to make your next cut.”

Browns coach Bill Belichick continues to be the most hated man in northeast Ohio after Sunday’s 27-20 loss to the Oilers. Never has so much animosity been directed at anyone involved in the Browns organization, although team owner Art Modell is running a close second.

Most of the 71,668 fans at Cleveland Stadium weren’t about to let Belichick and Modell off the hook for their decision two weeks ago to waive beloved quarterback Bernie Kosar. Sunday was the team’s first home game since the decision was made, (p. C8)
