Social learning theorists are interested in personality assessment mainly for the purpose of behaviour change. They define a specific behaviour pattern and attempt to discover the stimulus indentions that control that pattern.

They are also interested in assessing the individual’s response capabilities; a particular behaviour may fail to appear not because the proper reinforcing stimuli are eking but because that response is not in the individual’s repertoire. In addition to assessing stimulus conditions and response capabilities, the social learning theorist may want to measure the degree and of self-reinforcement the individual uses.
