Modern psychology has emphasised the importance of the organic nature of learning process, and as such, both teaching and learning of social sciences like history, geography, economics and political science are being recognised as social activities. In recent years, the emphasis on teaching has shifted from the memorization of facts of history to social participation for learning history.

History has undergone a great change in the second half of 20th century, and its scope has been widened. More stress is being laid on social, economic and cultural factors. Therefore, many divergent opinions and points of view can be expressed on any one of the topics of history. Thus, for making the meaning of various concepts clear, socialised techniques or discussion method of teaching will be most appropriate.
