Camel shows the following adaptations

1. Each foot has only two toes. While walking, the camel uses its entire foot. Its hooves are covered by a large sole which helps it to move on hot, slippery sand. It can cover about 100 km in a day at a speed of 20-25 km per hour without food and water.

2. It can live up to 10-12 days without food and water. When water is available, it can drink as much as 50 liters of water at one time. This water gets evenly distributed in all the tissues of its body.

3. The hump on its back is actually a food reserve filled with fat. This food is utilized during the period when it does not get anything to eat. This is why the size of the hump gets reduced during those days when the camel does not have any thing to eat.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

4. Very little water is e3xceted from its body. When it does not get water, it passes about half a liter of urine in a day.

5. The faecal matter of camel contains very little amount of water. It passes nearly dry dung.

6. Its breathing rate is very slow. This is to prevent water loss during breathing.

7. It can adjust its internal temperature to the surroundings. Due to this the loss of moisture through perspiration is nil.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

8. It has a slender snout which bears a cleft upper lip. It has long eyelashes and muscular nostrils which can be closed to protect it from windblown sand.

9. It can withstand dehydration up to 25 per cent of body weight.
