1. To know the nutritional requirements of the family members

A housewife should make an estimate of the nutritional requirements of all the family members’ accord; to the Table 6.2 given by ICMR on page 75.

2. Use of food groups. Make a list of foods according to their availability in a par­ticular season depending on the budget. A balanced diet must have foods from all the food groups.

3. Use of knowledge of nutritive value of foodstuffs. Nutritive value of foods has been mentioned by the advisory committee of ICMR (appendix 4, page 314). This table gives us knowledge of nutrients present in per 100 gms. of a foodstuff. This table is helpful in planning a nutritious and balanced diet.

4. Making lists. Make a separate list of things which can be bought for a fortnight or a month and a separate list for perishable items.

5. Estimate the amount. Make an esti­mate of the amount of foods according to the family size.
