These are –

(i) Gravity System

(ii) Pumping system

(iii) Gravity & Pumping system combine

ADVERTISEMENTS:

(i) Gravity System:

The service of distribution reservoirs are generally provided in the distribution system to store clear treated water before it is dispatched to the consumers. These reservoirs may be constructed of brick masonry, cement concrete, RCC, steel, stone masonry.

Type of Reservoirs –

(a) Surface reservoirs

ADVERTISEMENTS:

(b) Elevated reservoirs

(c) Stand pipe

(ii) Pumping System:

Water is directly pumped into to the mains leading to the consumers.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Disadvantage of Pumping System –

(a) In case of power failure the entire water distribution system of locality is disturbed.

(b) Pumps should always work.

(iii) Gravity & Pumping System Combined:

ADVERTISEMENTS:

The treated water is pumped & stored in an elevated distribution reservoir. Advantage of gravity and pumping system combined.

(a) Pump work at uniform rate, less wear & tear of pump.

(b) When pump is not working water is available in reservoirs.
