According to Comte, one of the pioneers of evolutionary theories, all societies pass through three stages of growth;
(i) Theological stage-which is guided by supernatural wisdom;
(ii) Metaphysical stage-a transitional stage in which supernatural beliefs are replaced by abstract principles as cultural guidelines; and
(iii) Positive or scientific stage-in which society is guided by evidence based on scientific laws.
