This is the second phase of a growth when cells attain their maximum size. The enlarging cell has a large quantity of solute particles and as a result water enters into the cell increasing its turgidity and volume. Some physiologists believe that increased cellulose deposition in the enlarging cell attracts large quantities of water increasing its turgidity. Another change that is noticed in the enlarging cell is vacuolation. A large central vacuole appears which pushes the cytoplasm to the periphery. Meanwhile the elastic cell wall dilates and elongation takes place due to stretching and deposition of molecules of cellulose. Cellulose synthesis is maximum at this stage.
