Notes on Relationship between the President and the Prime Minister

According to the Constitution, the Prime Minister is appointed by the President and remains in office during the pleasure of the President. In actual practice, however, the choice of the President in the appointment of Prime Minister is limited. He appoints only that person as Prime Minister who is the leader of the party having an absolute majority in Lok Sabha.

The Prime Minister remains in office as long as he enjoys the confidence of majority in the Lok Sabha. The President cannot remove him from office at his own will. In actual practice, all the powers of the President are exercised by the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is the real ruler of the country and the President is only a nominal head.
