One of the remarkable translations of the period is that of Higden's polychronicon (Latin) by a priest John of Trevisa about the year 1387.

The prose style is awkward sentences long tortuous, and the dialect used is south west archaic and difficult to understand. However, the work is important as it tells us much about the state of the English language at the time. It tells us that English had become the language of the schools and was fast developing.
