Growing out of the tradition of positivism, it seeks to understand the general principles (or laws) that govern any set of specific events or experiences.

This approach assumes that an objective reality exists independent of the perceiver and that we can come to know it, however dimly. Social research in this tradition proceeds by offering tentative laws (called theories) and then attempting to disconfirm them through their testable implications (called hypotheses).
