'Vastu' literally means a place where one lives. Thus, Vastusashtra is a science which tells about the place which is favourable for man to inhabit and regarding the "design of the house which can bring happiness in its owner's life. The study of Vastusashtra is very ancient. Its origin dates back to the Vedic age. The Vedas mention in detail the different aspects which ought to be kept in mind while designing and constructing a house. These include the selection of proper land, rituals pertaining to the possession of land, purification of land, Vastuchakra, foundation of the building and its shape and size, the entrance gate, the position of different rooms including the bathroom, the neighbourhood and the adequate time to take the final possession of the house. Besides, the Vedas also mention the ways to remove the Vastu effects. Vastusashtra has been classified into many divisions like Grihavastu, Prasadvastu, Nagarvastu, Durgvastu etc. Hindus believe that if a house is constructed as per the Vastu rules, the people of that house remain happy and prosperous lifelong.
