Chandragupta's fame rests not on upon his conquests, but also on his being a ruler. In fact, to Chandragupta belonged the credit of introducing an organize system of government for the first time in India. Under the Maun administrative system king was the all-powerful man though he was; not an autocrat.

He ran the administration with the help of counselors. Chandragupta also maintained a strong and organized army. The peace and discipline that had prevailed in the empire during his reign also helped the growth of trade and commerce According to the Jaina tradition, during his old days Chandragupta abdicated the throne in favour of his son Bindusara. He breathe his last at Sravanabelgola (in present Karnataka) as an ascetic.
