Notes on the objectives of the rain water harvesting

It is a technique of increasing the recharge of groundwater by capturing and storing rainwater by constructing structures such as dug wells, percolating pit, check dams. Rain water is stored in ground water reservoirs by adopting artificial recharge techniques to meet the house-hold needs through storage in tanks. The objectives of the rain water harvesting are:

(i) To meet the increasing demand of water.

(ii) To reduce run off.

(iii) To avoid flooding of roads.

(iv) To augment the groundwater storage and to raise the water table.

(v) To reduce groundwater pollution.

(vi) To improve the quality of groundwater.

(vii) To supplement domestic water requirement during summer and long dry spells.
