Brief note on Taxonomy in animals

Taxonomy is concerned with describing and naming the many kinds of organisms that:

(1) Exist today, those that has been (2) extinct for many, even million of years ago and those (3) that one become extinct.

Stages in Taxonomy:

There are three stages of taxonomy as (1) alpha taxonomy (2) Beta taxonomy and (3) Gamma taxonomy.

(1) Alpha Taxonomy: It is the level or stage at which the species are4 characterized and named.

(2) Beta taxonomy: It is the analysis of intra-specific variations and evolutionary studies as speciation.

(3) Gamma Taxonomy: It is the analysis of intra-specific variations and evolutionary studies as speciation.

The trends of taxonomy are not only to identify, describe and arrange animals in convenient groups or categories but to understand their evolutionary history and mechanism of evolution.

Now the taxonomy is made to sub-grouping of species like sub-species and population. The old morphological species are now called biological species which include ecological, genetically and biochemical character. The current taxonomical approaches involve e in explaining the true structure and evolutionary position of the species.

The different modern taxonomical approaches are:

(a) Morphological approach.

(b) Immature stages and embryological approach.

(c) Ecological approach.

(d) Behavioural approach.

(e) Cytological approach.

(f) Biochemical approach.

(g) Numerical taxonomical approach.

(h) Differential systematic approach.
